Kyoto has no sumo stables to visit — the sport's stables are in Tokyo. What Kyoto does offer, and how to see real morning practice on a Kyoto-based trip.
Kyoto is the city travellers most often search for sumo in and the one least able to provide it. There are no professional sumo stables in Kyoto — the sport’s stables are concentrated in Tokyo, with temporary quarters appearing in tournament host cities. No guided morning practice visit runs here.
What Kyoto has instead
Sumo-themed dining and performance experiences, which are entertainment rather than training — enjoyable, but a different category, and worth booking with clear eyes about what they are. Seeing real practice from a Kyoto base
Tokyo is a little over two hours from Kyoto by Shinkansen, and morning practice ends by 09:00–10:00 — which unfortunately means a same-day trip does not work: the visits meet at 07:15–07:45, before the first train could get you there. The realistic plan is to schedule the stable visit for a morning you are already in Tokyo, at either end of your trip.
If your dates fall in March, Osaka — 15 minutes from Kyoto — hosts the spring tournament, and a tournament day is the best sumo you can watch anywhere.
